It holds a maximum of 6 Buckets in its inventory.
The Geothermal Generator works best with a continual source of lava, since it has to power up again every time it runs out.
Powering up consists of Building up Hull Temperature, followed by a growing production rate, maxing out at 90 gJ/t.
If not connected to anything, the Geothermal Generator wil build up to the maximum production rate, and then stop. Keeping the maximum rate, but not actually generating more power nor using more lava.
